He Isn’t the Same Superman Without Lois Lane
I’ve been thinking a lot about what it means to be on the same team -- about how in my marriage one of the most important things I can do is to partner with my wife and make sure that we are both in this together. In the Bible, they talk about meeting together and spurring one another on towards good deeds.
When I talk about the same team what I mean is that you both are having equal contributions to life’s major decisions. That if I want to take a new job, then Karen needs to be a part of the process. I don’t think it works well if we don’t take the time to make choices together. When I talk to couples, a big sticking point is always around parenting: Who gets to make the choices about parenting? The same team answer would be, “we do.” Both partners get to give input for the family.
Often times one of the stumbling blocks for couples is the fact that the other one is not engaged. Well, if you are truly embracing the team mentality then it is time to step up and have an opinion. It doesn’t have to be the same opinion, but just have some thoughts about something! After all, if you are in this together, then what is important to your spouse is also important to you.
As I was thinking about this, I was thinking about Superman. I bet he saved thousands of citizens and defeated hundreds of bad guys, yet the storyline always goes back to him and Lois. I suppose that this is the case because life isn’t as full if you don’t share it with someone. No matter if that person is a friend, a spouse, or a family member: sharing our lives – being on the same team – is what makes things special.
You can be the most super person in the world, but if you aren’t engaged in healthy relationships then it really just isn’t the same.
Hebrews 10:24-25 says “And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another – an all the more as you see the Day approaching.”
