Last week I took part in celebrating the life of an incredible man. He was the kind of guy who oozed fun and, at the same time, could have the best conversations with you. Pat Kiefer was one of the most amazing men I’ve ever met.

As we sat at the viewing, celebrating his life, I watched the video scroll through precious memories. There was one thing I kept hearing over and over again. Pat had the best faces. No one could capture a moment with a goofy face like Uncle Pat. He was gifted in that department.

Two days after the viewing I was hanging out with Caleb, and he hit me with this face. It was the perfect embodiment of goofy, and it was adorable. I was immediately thrown into a thought process that had me thinking about goofy faces.

We just don’t see enough goofy faces! Why is that? Why are we so afraid to let our goofy side show on our face?

I think it comes down to three principles:

• Goofy faces require courage. If you want to embrace your goofy side then you must not care what other people think. You have to be willing to throw caution to the wind and let it all out. The best goofy faces come when you just don’t care!

• Goofy faces require vulnerability. Sometimes it can be hard to admit, but letting your inside emotion out is like letting people look into your soul. If you want to be goofy, you have to be vulnerable.

• Goofy faces require joy. Joy is something that lives deep in our hearts. It is bigger than any circumstance, any obstacle. When you have joy it is easy to find the goofy faces   

Pat found a way to live out these principles with an amazing life that was peppered with goofy faces. He impacted the world around him with those faces, and as I look at Caleb, I can see he is on the same path.
